WA buyers increasingly seek sustainable features

Recent research suggests that house hunters in Western Australia are increasingly interested in buying green when it comes to apartments, with sustainability considered alongside price and location.

The research survey undertaken by the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute sought to determine whether people in Perth are likely to buy into green developments, and highlighted that “sustainability features” have now become a top consideration along with the usual criteria of affordability, location and size.

The producers of the report, Jemma Green and Peter Newman, explained in an interview with Perth Now that the “results suggest that if the market provided more options of housing with sustainability attributes, people would choose them and developers would have a larger range of buyers.”

“The findings strongly suggest that as the market offers more developments with these attributes, residents’ demand for them will also increase.”

This proved true for Subiaco social worker Jenny Marsh, who recently bought an one-bedroom off-the-plan apartment in Evermore WGV, a Yolk Property Group development in White Gum Valley near Fremantle.

Ms March said that she was drawn buy the development’s aim to be zero-carbon and their use of the shared solar technology, which showed a clear commitment to sustainability.

The development hopes to be “WA’s greenest”, with 24 properties set to feature cutting-edge solar and lithium battery technology, real-time water and power monitoring, an electric vehicle charging point and communal bicycles.

More than half of the 24 apartments on offer at Evermore WGV have been sold since launching in July 2016 and Co-Director of Yolk Property Group Pete Adams said purchaser interest remains strong. Feedback from buyers suggests that the transparent and tangible sustainability initiatives attracted them to the development.

Evermore WGV will also play a role in a pilot program led by Curtin University at the WGV estate, examining how to increase the uptake of solar photovoltaics in strata residential developments.
