The 2017 Deputy Premier’s Award for Urban Design

On Friday 24 March, Logan City Council’s Beenleigh Town Square Project was named the winner of the Deputy Premier’s Award for Urban Design 2017 by the Deputy Premier, the Honourable Jackie Trad MP, at the State Library of Queensland.

Designed in collaboration by Logan City Council, AECOM, MRCagney and Wilson Architects, the Beenleigh Town Square is a key urban space that has been driven by a desire from the community to transform the physical heart of the town into a place of cultural exchange and activity.

In their citation the jury commented: “This project was a bold and decisive re-prioritisation of a six way intersection into a transformative public place for the community. This catalyst project has created a new address to Beenleigh that reimagines the role of the central business district as a place for people. It creates new opportunities for local events such as musical performances, farmers markets and community gatherings.

“This simple intervention, negotiated through complex and collaborative processes, demonstrates the enormous potential of urban design to re-imagine our cities as inclusive places for people that have direct economic, social and environmental benefit.”

The Deputy Premier’s Award for Urban Design recognises contemporary Queensland urban design projects of the highest quality and encourages cities, towns and communities across Queensland to strive for best practice in all projects.

The award highlights the critical role of good urban design in shaping Queensland and how collaborative relationships can lead to the successful development of the built environment.
