Summer of design

2016 has been an exciting year for Design Tasmania, with the organisation celebrating the milestone of 40 years, 10 years of the Design Tasmania Award and the prestigious Wood Collection’s 25th year.

Design Tasmania is hosting their Summer in Design launch, comprising of four exhibitions; 40 Years 40 Designers Part 2, Shapeshifters: 3D Printing the Future, 10th Design Tasmania Award 2017, and the UTAS Furniture Design Graduating show, Focus.

In order to make space for this line up the Tasmanian Wood Collection has taken up residence at Clarendon House as a collaborative project with the National Trust. Design Tasmania will announce more about this project in the coming weeks.

Tonight announces the award winners of the Design Tasmania Award 2017. The prize categories are the Design Tasmania Award, supported by Clemenger Tasmania, Veneer Prize supported by Specialty Veneers and the Future Focused Award, supported by Hawthorn Football Club. The People’s Choice Award will be revealed in Feburary 2017 and is open for voting at Design Tasmania, this award is supported by Foot and Playsted.

Design Tasmania welcomes the Australian Design Centre’s exhibition Shapeshifters: 3D Printing the Future as a playful exploration of 3D printing. It’s all about imagination, innovation and new methods of making, drawing on the high-tech and rapidly evolving world of 3D printers and fluid extrusion methodology. Design Tasmania will be organizing summer workshops to explore this new technology and the creative process. Details will be announced in December so please check the website for details.

Annually Design Tasmania welcomes the Furniture Design Graduating students to exhibit their final showcase. This year the grad show Focus, will be unveiled by the students during their personal floor talks at the opening, explaining their processes and inspiration for their design.

The Summer launch will be opened by the founder of Design Tasmania, Gary Cleveland and will include opening remarks by CEO Karina Clarke, followed by Floor talks from the graduating students.

The Summer launch opens at 6pm. Casa Paella will be serving Tapas and limited edition Paella in the Claudio Alcorso courtyard of Design Tasmania, accompanied by Moorilla wines and Moo Brew beer for purchase.
