Jumbled Builds a House, Orange
From the moment Pip Brett from Jumbled first glimpsed the picturesque western facing piece of land overlooking Spring Creek Dam and Mount Canobolas in New South Wales, Australia at sunset, she knew she had found the perfect location for her dream house and forever home.
Having successfully collaborated with Studio Esteta on her retail and hospitality hub, “The Sonic”, Pip again reached out to the team for help in conceptualising her new family home. With a mutual appreciation for design and detail, their combined creative forces, helped push both the architectural and interior boundaries to create a space that is both responsive to the site, connected to its surrounds and highly personalised.
Inspired by Moroccan homes she had adored on her travels, Pip was drawn to simple forms, earthy tones, and textured finishes which disappear into the landscape. She particularly admired the strong, minimalist and contemporary designs of Studio KO, and their work in Villa E was a major influence in the design language of her Orange home, especially their use of gorgeous picture windows to frame spectacular views from the bathroom.
Pip wanted her forever home to be an extension of its backdrop, and to capture every aspect of the beautiful vistas. From the way the building settles into the terrain, to the earthy materiality and curved forms, each considered element of the design respects the surrounding landscape and relates to the views beyond.
It comes as no surprise that Pip’s favourite nook is the floor to ceiling window in the ensuite, where she can gaze contently at the view while enjoying a long soak in her dreamy Chi bath , with a glass of bubbles in hand.
“I love a bath after a long day, so the bathrooms were very important in creating a place of relaxation and calmness” Pip explains, “I come from a long line of bath lovers – a long, hot soak can cure anything! When we started thinking about what we wanted in our bathrooms, all I wanted was day-spa vibes!”
The aspiration for the bathroom was driven by a desire to create a sanctuary from the craziness of their busy lives. Pip wanted the bathrooms to not only look beautiful and provide a haven from the outside world, but to also be highly functional and withstand the demands of family life. When considering materials, she wanted earthy, textural finishes which reinforced the interiors connection to nature and Moroccan inspiration, which were also durable and practical. A tactile, sculptural bath handcrafted from apaiserMARBLE® was top of her wish list.
“I love that they are handcrafted, from the earth and sculptural yet functional pieces. Our apaiser stone bath is the hero piece in our bathroom.” – Pip
“I like to think of it as a piece of art. The handcrafted marble feels like my very own piece of luxury, and I love soaking in it while I watch the sun go down,” describes Pip, “It ticks all of my boxes – beautiful to look at, lovely to touch and BEST OF ALL…it’s easy to clean!” As curves are a feature throughout the home, the clean lines and tapered, curved base of our Chi bath make it the perfect centrepiece for Pip’s ensuite.
Pip also wanted the home to be warm in winter and cool in summer, and to embrace sustainability in every way possible. From the property’s strategic orientation which maximises northern light and natural ventilation, to energy efficient fixtures such as hydronic under floor heating (UFH) and long-lasting, sustainable finishes like the apaiserMARBLE® bath, Pip’s forever home will stand the test of time.
