Ha Architecture designs Shimmerlands pavilion

Ha Architecture, Product and Environment have collaborated with Ben Sibley to design the pavilion for Melbourne University’s Shimmerlands, a two-month festival of music, cinema, food and social activities.

The festival will provide entertainment day and night until Sunday 26 February. It includes an outdoor cinema, outdoor music amphitheatre, multiple bars and an al fresco dining area hosting an extensive range of Melbourne’s finest restaurants.

The heart of Shimmerlands is The Pavilion, designed by Ha Architects with the assistance of University of Melbourne graduates, which houses a bar with space for visitors to relax.

The design itself is modular, taking only took ten days to construct and, when it is time, only four days to deconstruct – ready to reuse at any time in any location.

The scaffolding used in the creation of the pavilion becomes its key design component, providing a sculptural element that is immediately eye-catching.

Ha Architecture principal Nick Harding said they topped the structure with “a dynamic and autonomous ceiling ‘veil,’ [which] shades the pavilion throughout the day, and also provides a medium to reflect and cast light [into] the night.”

The ‘veil’ allowed for a level of transparency and porosity, embellishing the semi-permanence of the structure.”
