Design Canberra 2017 explores acclaimed homes

As part of DESIGN Canberra 2017, explore the living rooms of acclaimed Canberra houses and discover pop-up exhibitions with works on sale by local artists, makers and craft practitioners and enjoy a progressive exhibition as you take in the beauty of design in our own backyard.

DESIGN Canberra 2017 will be inspired by the spirit of modernism, it is a celebration of the creativity, experimentation and optimism for which Canberra’s mid-century architecture is acclaimed. From the time of Walter and Marion Griffin’s visionary design a century ago to iconic experimental modernist architecture of the 1950s and 60s, through to contemporary and sustainable design developments today, Canberra has been – and will always be – a living design laboratory.

In the spirit of a living design laboratory, DESIGN Canberra will experiment with new ideas and expand the most successful programs into new directions in the 2017 festival. The Living Rooms Exhibition features acclaimed Canberra architects and designers participating in the interactive event such as Rob Henery Architects, Lighthouse Architecture and science and The Mill: Architecture + Design.

Each Sunday during the November festival, four architecturally acclaimed Canberra houses will be open to the public. Representing the best in heritage renovations, modernist and contemporary style and ecological sustainability.

Rachael Coghlan, CEO of Craft ACT: Craft and Design, and Artistic Director of DESIGN Canberra, wanted to “Invite people with acclaimed architectural houses to open up their living rooms so people can come in and have a look at their beautiful homes without pretending they’re buying the house at an open inspection.”

“And we’ve invited young emerging makers to curate little pop-up exhibitions in those living rooms so it might be just on a dining table or a kitchen bench and those emerging curators have worked with established designers and makers to develop these exhibitions. And works in those spaces will be available for sale so it’s a really wonderful way to celebrate design in the every day and the beautiful architecture and making in our city.” Coghlan continued.

Living Rooms: Where architecture meets design which meets craft; an open home with a difference. Get inside some of Canberra’s most architecturally beautiful and significant homes each Sunday throughout the DESIGN Canberra Festival running from the 7th – 26th of November, 2017.
