Announcing the 2016 Australian Urban Design Awards winners

The recipients of the 2016 Australian Urban Design Awards were announced at a ceremony in Melbourne on the evening of 13 October 2016. This year’s awards saw a high calibre of entries from across Australia’s cities, towns and communities.

The 2016 jury were impressed by both the record number of entries and the level of excellence and innovation in urban design seen in the nation’s premier awards.

The patrons of the Australian Urban Design Awards are Malcolm Turnbull MP, Prime Minister of Australia and Lucy Turnbull AO, former Lord Mayor of Sydney and Chief Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission.

Through four awards categories, the Australian Urban Design Awards cover a broad range of urban design work, from built projects and initiatives to publications and reports that will make a difference to the places, spaces, building and infrastructure of Australia’s cities, towns and regions.

“Good urban design is about delivering great places for people. Creating great places is a team sport – it takes skilled professionals across a range of disciplines working together with the guidance of the community to deliver outcomes (or places) of lasting value,” says Kirsty Kelly, Chief Executive Officer for the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).

“The Planning Institute of Australia believes that planning for good urban design is vital to solving the liveability, sustainability and productivity challenges faced in our cities and towns,” continues Ms Kelly.

“Australia faces many challenges in a rapidly changing world – population change, extreme weather events and climate change, the transition of energy production, transport, housing affordability, and sustainability. These are serious issues and urban design has a major role to play in creatively addressing them,” says 2016 Australian Urban Design Awards jury chair William Chandler OAM, Director, Chandler Consulting Services, who represents the Planning Institute of Australia and Urban Design Forum on the jury.

“The Australian Urban Design Awards demonstrate that the planners, designers and managers of Australia’s urban realms are, and must be, skilled, innovative and show strong leadership. This year we saw a record number of entrants from across Australia’s cities, towns and communities and the jury was impressed by the high quality entries in all the categories,” continues Mr Chandler.

The jury for the 2016 Australian Urban Design Awards included representatives from the nine peak bodies from across the built environment that support the program:
