Black Dolphin Motel in Merimbula, originally commissioned by visionary David Yencken and designed by architect Robin Boyd in the 1960s.

Originally commissioned by visionary David Yencken and designed by architect Robin Boyd, the 1960s Black Dolphin Motel in Merimbula, on the New South Wales Sapphire Coast, has been treated to a light-touch intervention. Initiated by Ross Harding of Finding Infinity, the project saw Kerstin Thompson Architects (KTA) set the design direction, working with Wilderness Building Co and client Aspen Group. Showing the power of the edit, the project respects Boyd’s architectural vision – existing features are sharpened, not buried, and the building’s heritage qualities come back into focus through a restrained rework of its original logic.
