The Vision Behind ECHO.2

Developed by C.Street Projects and designed by Forum Studio in collaboration with Studio Amble and John Patrick Landscape Architects, ECHO.2 is an architecturally led response to Abbotsford’s heritage and future.

Forum Studio Director David Harrap shares his perspective:

On Abbotsford

“ECHO.2 was inspired by all that Abbotsford has to offer—the Yarra, the Victorian cottages of Raphael Street, and the repetition of forms that characterise the area. Brick was also important, drawn from buildings like the Carringbush Hotel, and it informed many of the design characteristics you see within the townhouses themselves.”

On Passivhaus

“Passivhaus is about creating a better building. The detailing creates increased airtightness and reduced condensation risk. One of the great by-products is the quality of the spaces themselves. Windows are carefully positioned for natural light, the temperature is consistent, and energy use is dramatically reduced. Given today’s environmental challenges, that’s something pretty special.”

On Heritage

“Maintaining the existing heritage building was a primary focus. Its high ceilings and detailing really inspired the way we approached the four townhouses. Through a detailed process of restoration and improvement we’ve been able to rejuvenate it for the next 100 years, setting a benchmark for the new homes along Raphael Street.”

On Sustainability

“There are three elements of sustainability that excite me most: reusing the existing heritage building; delivering homes that use very little energy; and creating buildings designed to last. This isn’t a project that will be replaced in 15 or 20 years. It’s designed for longevity—materials like brick will ensure these homes function as well in 50 or 100 years as they do today.”
