Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

Inspired by the beauty and the metaphorical significance of the island landscape, renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27 has orchestrated a delicate, rhythmic design for the new resort Patina Maldives. Set amongst the Fari Islands archipelago in North Malé Atoll, the Capella Hotel Group project is a radical example of biophilic design, conjuring up spaces and atmospheres that encourage deep connections with nature. Delicate architectural lines remain respectfully low, never breaching the horizon, in deference to the exuberant, encompassing blues above and below. Verdant landscaping envelops each of Patina Maldives’ 90 contemporary villas, alongside 20 Fari Studios in private sanctuary, yet unfolds invitingly into the surrounding island life; a simultaneous experience of isolation and belonging.

Kogan’s design vision is reflected throughout Patina Maldives’ accommodation, restaurants and social buildings. Public spaces are open, light and inviting and offer a communal beating heart with the Fari Marina Village and Fari Beach Club. Here, guests will find alluring retail and enticing dining options as well as a large, commissioned James Turrell pavilion. The permeable design of the island’s buildings promotes a pleasing and inviting experimentation of each space; these are organised according to a hierarchy of textures and coverings that creates a gentle transition between open and closed spaces.

Throughout the interiors, earthy colour palettes, subtle textures and matte surfaces are complemented by arcadian materials to create a dialogue with nature, through wood, linen, rattan, paper cord, natural fibres and stone. Uniquely for the Maldives, floor-to-ceiling panoramic sliding window systems allow the villas to be opened to the elements on all three sides.

apaiser worked closely with Studio MK27 to create custom designed, freestanding bathtubs, which extend out from the interiors, blurring boundaries and drawing the outside world in whilst enticing inhabitants out. Handcrafted from our unique, apaiserMARBLE^®, the stone freestanding baths continue the theme of textural, natural materiality, maintaining the feel and sensual qualities of marble or stone, while providing a durable and functional alternative more suited to the demands of a resort.

Patina Maldives and Studio MK27 went to great lengths to make the resort as environmentally conscious as possible. Before the foundations were even laid, Patina Maldives committed to banning single-use plastics on site — even construction workers used refillable bottles — while trees and shrubs were transplanted from islands that were due to be cleared for industrial purposes. In minimizing its carbon footprint, the luxury resort utilises solar power, a sophisticated filtration system that returns purified water to the surrounding landscape, zero-waste kitchens, recycled marine plastics and eco-friendly materials such as apaiserMARBLE^® luxury baths. Containing up to 90% repurposed crushed marble, which would otherwise be consigned to landfill, our commitment to sustainably sourced raw materials and responsible production processes, made apaiser the perfect bathware partner for the project.
