Sanctum

‘Atmosphere: A Revival’ is a sauna installation by Sydney-based art and architecture collective, Studio Rain.

The work sought to promote wellbeing and revive bathing culture along the Yarra River. This project drew upon Scandinavian and Japanese bathing rituals, where public bathhouses present the opportunity to focus on the body and engage in community life. Conceived for modern urbanites, the sauna offers a salve for loneliness, anxiety and disconnection to nature.

Designed to be completely off-grid, the sauna has a lightweight, prefabricated structure to achieve a sensitive footprint on the site. The structure is crafted from reclaimed timber and offcuts from construction were quite ingeniously reused to supply heat.
