Designed by Amber Road for Edition Coffee Roasters in Sydney, this café packs an astounding amount of Japanese-inspired panache into its 110-square-metres.
A moody palette of black, charcoal and inky indigos is the perfect accompaniment to Japanese architectural references including timber charred using shou sugi ban, shirasu kabe (raked wall plaster made from volcanic soil) and zaisu (chairs without legs). One of three seating arrangements, the sunken dining area radiates with quiet tranquility and is accented by a deciduous maple integrated into a timber planter. Notably, lighting is kept to a minimum and no two fittings are the same. Rife with organic, rustic materials and time-honoured production techniques, the deep character of this space belies its youth – and, arguably, its location.
