Welcome Shelter

North of Gisborne on New Zealand’s East Coast is the Longbush Ecosanctuary, over the last 15 years Jeremy and Dame Anne Salmond have overseen a rapid restoration of the 120 hectares with removal of invasive pests and weeds and the planting of hundreds of thousands of native trees.

Their latest project for the sanctuary is the Welcome Shelter designed by architectural designer Sarosh Mulla. With the view to promote the idea of us all being responsible for our natural environment, the Welcome Shelter was built by 88 volunteers using materials donated by 88 local businesses. A large canopy protects visitors from the sun and rain in this large outdoor classroom on the hillside, perfectly framing the view for visiting school groups, ecologists and tourists – free of charge.
